Khara Soda (Soda Ash)
Khara Soda (Soda Ash)

Khara soda is Washing soda or Sodium Carbonate  Na2CO3, is sodium salt of  carbonic acid. It most commonly occurs as a crystalline heptahydrate, which readily  effloresces to form a white powder, the monohydrate. Sodium carbonate is domestically well known for its everyday use as a water softener. It can be extracted from the ashes of many plants. It is synthetically produced in large quantities from salt  (sodium chloride)and  limestone by a method known as the  solvay process.

The manufacture of  glass is one of the most important uses of sodium carbonate. Sodium carbonate acts as a  flux for silica, lowering the melting point of the mixture to something achievable without special materials.

In domestic use, it is used as a water softener in laundering. It competes with the magnesium and calcium ions in hard water and prevents them from bonding with the detergent being used. Sodium carbonate can be used to remove grease, oil and wine stains.

It can help remove alcohol and grease stains from clothing, as well as calcifications in everything from coffee pots and espresso makers to boilers and hot water heaters. Running a solution of sodium carbonate and water through these systems from time to time will help prevent the minerals in water from building up in them and keep them functioning at their best.Soda ash can also be used to increase the alkalinity in swimming pools, helping to ensure the proper pH balance of the water. It can be used in dying to help the dye bond to the fabric effectively. Photographers also use a sodium carbonate solution as part of the photo development process.
